Deb Martin Memorial Slalom

The 2019 Deb Martin Slalom will be held on Sunday, September 8th 2019. Join us down on the Greys River (map below) to paddle a challenging 20 gate slalom course on class III whitewater. Competitors must navigate upstream and downstream gates, with time penalties for hitting or missing gates. Each racer gets 2 runs and best time counts! Scroll to the bottom of the page for more information and past years’ results.

The 2017 Deb Martin Memorial Slalom on September 10th was a great event. With perfect weather and the fall colors in full effect, there is not better place to be than the Greys River Canyon. This year's course saw a little more water and some new gate placements, mixing it up from previous years' courses. Multi-year champion Jon Souter was fast yet again, winning the event by 1 second with a time of 1:44, even with a gate penalty. Young JHKC ripper Wyatt Doyle was hot on his heels coming in second with a time of 1:45. Rounding out the podium was 14 year old JHKC athlete Driscoll Larrow with a time of 1:52. It was a great day for the JHKC, with 16 kids racing and four of them scoring in the top 10 overall!

Very smooth Jo-Anne Lee from Utah took the top honors for the women with a very respectable time of 2:09, while Ruby Milligan took top honors for the Junior Women in 2:33. Luke Landino won the Junior Men's category with a time of 1:57, and Buck Milligan won the Munchkin men's category (under 12). Jon Hindman took top honors in the Master Men's division.

Also of note is Joshua 'Cartwheel' Hart, once again competing as the only open-boater in the race and only missing a single gate!

The 2017 Deb Martin Memorial Slalom will be held on Sunday, September 10th 2017.

2016 Recap- See below for results

Thanks to everyone who made it out to a beautiful, albeit windy, fall day down on the Greys River in Alpine, WY. We had an epic turnout this year, with over 53 racers competing in a challenging 19 gate slalom course, including 19 junior members from the JHKC.

The Junior men's category featured 13 fast racers, with Wyatt Doyle beating out Luke Landino and Desmond Concannon for top honors. Wyatt stunned the competition by also finishing second overall as a 15 year old with a time of 1:52! Luke and Des did extremely well themselves, both finishing in the overall top 10.

In the Junior women's category, JHKC superstar Ruby Milligan (2:27) took top honors, and beat many of the adult competitors along the way.

In the Munchkin categories (age 10 and under), brother and sister Nate and Neve Pruzan came out on top. Nate (2:16) beat Lucas Milligan and Theo Taft, who all completed a full course. Little Neve Pruzan (7 and 3/4 years old) got fed up watching her brothers get all the glory, and grabbed a bib and hit the water for the short course, paddling from gate 8 through the end.

Another lonely category, the Men's Open Canoe, featured 1 competitor Josh Huett, AKA Cartwheel, who completed the course only missing 2 gates with a time of 3:15.

In the Masters category, veterans and new paddlers alike competed with long time Deb Martin competitor Jon Hindman putting down two identical runs of 2:09 with no penalties. JHKC parent and sponsor Corey Milligan (2:15), in his second slalom race ever, took second place while another JHKC parent, Tom Concannon (2:50), came in third, beating 1 of his two sons along the way.

In the Open Women's category, Taylor Dwyer (2:18) beat out JHKC coach Emily Coleman (2:53) and Amber Hoover (3:06). Taylor's smooth paddling with no penalties put many of the men to shame.

With a huge turnout, the Open Men's category turned out to be a highly competitive field. Long time competitor and the 2015 winner Jon Souter crushed the competition by turning in both of the fastest times of the day, with 1:42 being the winning time. JHKC founder and big time supporter Aaron Pruzan (1:54) came in 2nd while 16 year old newcomer Collin Clark from Utah showed up and impressed with a 3rd place time of 1:55.

The Deb Martin Memorial Slalom is held each year through Slalom Rapid on the Greys River in Alpine, WY. Whitewater Slalom is an olympic event that tests the river running skills of even the best kayakers. Participants must navigate a series of downstream and upstream gates without making any contact with the gate poles. Time penalties are assessed for all gate touches and misses, the lowest overall time wins. Come out and race!

The Slalom Course is hung during the week prior to the event, please feel free to practice on the course at any time. DO NOT make any changes to the gates or gate setups with out first contacting a JHKC representative.

!!VOLUNTEERS!! We always need help setting gates the week prior to the race, and on race day we need help with timing, race organization, and clean-up. No experience necessary, we will train you!  Please contact JHKC director Rainer Kenney ( if you are interested in volunteering.

The 2016 Deb Martin Slalom will be held on Sunday September 11, 2016.

On-site registration will start at 10:00 and racing will begin at 12:00, hope to see you there!
